Altitude

Cool, wet highland village on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro

Climate

A Chagga village above Moshi with a 70-metre waterfall, banana groves and a home coffee ceremony, all at the foot of Kilimanjaro.

Materuni is the best half day you can spend around Moshi. A guide from the village leads you through banana and coffee plots to a waterfall that drops about 70 metres into a pool, and then back to a family home where you crush, roast and brew coffee the Chagga way.

It is an easy, friendly walk with a short scramble down to the falls. In the rainy months the path is muddy and the falls are stronger. It fits neatly before or after a Kilimanjaro climb, and it puts money directly into the village.
