The Great Migration

Where is the Great Migration this month?

Every year more than a million wildebeest, along with zebra and gazelle, travel a circular route through the Serengeti in search of fresh grass. Slide through the months to see where the herds are, then choose the safari that puts you there.

We schedule your dates and camps around where the animals will be.

River crossing odds

July to September gives the best chance, but crossings can never be guaranteed.

Calving season

January and February bring newborn calves and busy predators in the south.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Great Migration in Tanzania?

It never stops: the herds are always somewhere in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Calving happens in the south around January and February, and the Mara River crossings are usually between July and September.

Can you guarantee a river crossing?

No. Crossings depend on the herds and the water levels, and they can happen at any time of day or not at all during a stay. We give you the best odds by choosing the right area and giving you enough days.

Where should we stay to see the migration?

It depends on the month. We pick lodges or mobile camps close to the herds, and can move you between areas during a longer trip.
