You descend on a steep 4x4 track, usually from the Seneto side, and you work the floor in a loop: Lerai Forest for elephant and waterbuck, the hippo pool, the soda lake when the flamingos are in, and the open grassland where cats hunt in short grass. NCAA rules set the descent window and how long vehicles may stay. Picnic lunch is at designated sites, not wherever the view is pretty.

Black rhino are here. They are also few, often distant, and sometimes not seen at all on a given morning. Anyone selling "rhino guaranteed" is selling you a sentence, not a sighting. What you will see, almost always, is density: vehicles cluster because the animals cluster. A good driver leaves the jam and works the edges.

The rim is cold. Pack a fleece even in August. Lodges sit between 2,200 and 2,400 metres and the generator hum is part of the night. If you only have two days from Arusha, the 2-Day Tarangire and Ngorongoro Safari is the honest short trip: one night near the gate or on the rim, crater in the morning, back to Arusha before the gate scramble gets ugly.

Olduvai Gorge sits on the Serengeti road and is worth ninety minutes if you care how humans turned up in this landscape. It is not a game-drive substitute. Maasai bomas near the rim vary wildly in quality; we use homesteads that actually live there, and we say no when the stop is a ticket booth in a shuka.
