Overview

Stone Town is a maze of coral-stone houses built by Omani sultans, Indian traders and Swahili merchants, and it is best explored on foot with a guide who knows its stories. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The walk takes about three hours at an easy pace, and it works as the first stop on any Zanzibar visit. See Stone Town for background.
