Hot, dry savanna with a spring-fed oasis
Climate
A turquoise, spring-fed pool in the dry Hai plains where you can swim under palms, with a rope swing and Kilimanjaro in the distance on clear days.
Chemka, also called Kikuletwa, is a warm, clear pool fed from underground. The water is around body temperature and a few metres deep in the middle, with fish visible near the edges. It is a popular swim on the way back from a climb or a safari, and it is much quieter on weekdays.
Bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen. There is little shade beyond the palms, and the last stretch of road is rough, so we use a 4x4 rather than a small car.
